For years, the Bombers’ netball brigade has been forced to play on outdated courts with facilities that belong in the past rather than in a community that prides itself on its sporting spirit.
But in a win for the region, change is finally coming.
Moira Shire Council has approved the redevelopment of the Waaia Recreation Reserve, with construction set to begin after the Picola District Netball League season wraps up later this year.
The plan is to replace four ageing courts with two modern, multipurpose hardcourts that meet Netball Victoria and Tennis Australia standards.
Better lighting, safer fencing, and new shelters will make the courts more accessible, ensuring that players - young and old - have facilities that will cater to their needs.
Moira Shire council chair administrator Dr Graeme Emonson made it clear what this investment means for the region.
“Sport plays a crucial role in building healthy, connected and vibrant communities, and we know how important sport is in Moira, particularly in our smaller towns,” he said.
“New top-quality facilities will improve playing experience and modern sport infrastructure will help attract and retain more players in our local clubs, as well as improve safety and accessibility.”
The court redevelopment has been supported through the Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.
