The team was officially awarded the title on Sunday, January 26.
The brigade was recognised specifically for going beyond its primary mission of firefighting with members’ involvement in the CFA’s Fire Medical Response program, which aims to improve cardiac arrest survival outcomes.
The new Fire Medical Response program was rolled out by the CFA and Ambulance Victoria in December 2024.
It sees fire brigades dispatched simultaneously to cardiac arrests with the nearest ambulance, allowing CFA crews to provide life-saving CPR, defibrillation and support to patients in regional Victoria, providing the medical care they need sooner.
Euroa was one of the first brigades to sign up to provide life-saving support, alongside other brigades including Tatura, Numurkah and Yarrawonga.
The goal is to have 50 brigades across the state participating by the end of the rollout.
Despite how new the program is, community members wanted to honour the strong commitment and dedication the Euroa crew had shown.
“Although it is only in its infancy, it is nice for our members to be recognised for the efforts they put in. We’re all ready and willing to go when needed,” Euroa brigade captain Damon Rieusset said.
Mr Rieusset said any acknowledgement from peers was something to be proud of, but members were just happy to be of assistance to rural families.
“What it brings for the community is the greatest part. If it stops a family wondering if they could’ve done more, that’s the most important thing,” he said.
The team is made up of more than 14 volunteers who have completed more than 40 hours of professional face-to-face training by Ambulance Victoria and over 16 hours of online training to be deemed competent to provide this vital service.
“Everyone who put their hand up to do the training knew it wasn’t going to be an easy day in the office, but it’s for the greater good and we would highly recommend other brigades get involved in the program if they can,” Mr Rieusset said.
“Most of our members have done first aid training and were comfortable walking into the sessions with basic knowledge.
“However, it’s been pleasing to see the members gain the additional expertise and advance their abilities — all which will go a long way in providing them with greater confidence when faced with the task.”
The Rotary Club of Euroa nominated the brigade for the title, noting the firefighters’ efforts have not only improved the safety and wellbeing of the Euroa community, but also strengthened the bonds that hold the community together.
