Mary O’Brien, the founder of ‘Are You Bogged Mate’, will be guest speaker, and has a reputation for delivering a message in language blokes can understand.
There is already local support for the initiative, which will be hosted by Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group (Deni MHAG).
Elders Deniliquin is one local business that has recently fundraised and donated towards the local mental health group Deni MHAG (Mental Health Awareness Group) and the upcoming event.
It held a fundraising auction of rural supplies at a recent client night, with proceeds presented this week to Deni MHAG, which also received a GrainCorp grant last year for rural mental health and wellbeing.
The Blokes Night In is another Deni MHAG initiative to support men’s health, and follows the launch of its ‘Share The Load’ campaign in December, which is all about resources for farmers, their mates and people living and working in the country to help support their mental health and lighten the load.
The group decided to organise another blokes’ event, targeted at farmers, tradies, truckies, blue-collar workers and those that support them (including our rural businesses) to share messaging of the importance of getting help when one might be feeling a bit bogged down.
Deni MHAG spokesperson Lourene Liebenberg said the event would be a great opportunity for the community, focused on the challenges rural communities face,
“Mary has travelled all over the country and to have her come to Deni is very exciting.
“We hope all our clubs, businesses and organisations will get involved and share the information when we put the posters out and come out as teams to support the event, but more importantly to learn how to support each other and where to find the help,” she said.
Deni MHAG is grateful for the support from Elders Deniliquin, whose representative Meg Brooks said the client night and auction “went well”, adding “it was good to catch up with our clients and do something to support the community”.
Mrs Liebenberg said Elders “have come on board with significant support to make this event happen, and ensures we can give our blokes a great feed and market the event well so we can get a big crowd to attend”.
Sam Joice from Elders Deniliquin said they were keen to support our regional and rural workers and that “we are here to support our farmers and rural community”.
Deni MHAG hopes to garner more support from the community and businesses to also have an auction on the night as a fundraiser for Deni MHAG, as well as a raffle for the event.
