Sandra Bennett was named as citizen of the year, and Rory Martin was named as young person of the year at a ceremony in Kerang on Wednesday, January 22.
Mayor Garner Smith congratulated the award recipients, and recognised every nominee for their contributions to the community.
“All who were nominated are winners as far as my fellow councillors and I are concerned, with our communities the beneficiaries of their efforts,” Cr Smith said.
Ms Bennett was chosen as citizen of the year for her dedication to and passion for the Quambatook community.
Cr Smith said she had a great knowledge of the area, had been involved in various sporting groups, and was a key supporter of emergency services and volunteers during the 2011 floods.
“Sandra’s greatest contribution is via the town’s Biggest Morning Tea,” Cr Smith said.
“Held in memory of her friend, Cheryl Hind, this event has run for the past 22 years, with the 2024 edition raising more than $14,000.”
Mr Martin was selected as young person of the year for his artistic talents, and has been recognised previously for his creative skills.
“Rory takes pride in his work, consistently achieving in art, and has plenty of promise,” Cr Smith said.
June Bagg, Tim Betson, Adrian Dee, Claire Fry, Adam Gardiner, Ron McKerrow, Greg Murphy, Tiarna Shepard and Zarne Thamm were also recognised as nominees during the ceremony.
