Vegemite art steals the show at exhibition

Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre’s latest exhibit is showcasing the creativity of University of the Third Age students.

Members of the art group have come together to showcase some of their art at MEAC, with a wide display of subjects, mediums and styles on display across the walls of the centre.

Jeanette Fry and Mary Henghan have been attending art classes with U3A for a number of years, and were excited to showcase some of the art they’ve been working on in and out of classes in this new exhibit, which opened on January 15.

“We love our art,” Ms Fry said.

“Every now and again, I will put my name down, and we’ll exhibit here, for whoever wants to do it.”

The accessibility and low cost of exhibiting at MEAC make it a favourite for artists to showcase their work.

“It’s all about promoting our art and socialising,” Ms Fry said.

“It’s nice to be able to exhibit locally.”

The artists have displayed their works in many different venues in the Goulburn Valley, including in Shepparton and Kyabram.

Working within their own individual styles and mediums, no two paintings are the same.

Some paintings reflect moments and travels, like Mrs Henghan’s trip to Shanghai, while others are unique in what the artist has used, such as Mrs Fry’s painting made out of Vegemite.

“It’s no different than watercolour,” she said.

“I did it on watercolour paper, and you just tone the Vegemite down with water.”
