On Monday, January 20, the bridge began to be replaced by a new concrete structure, which the council said would help to ensure its longevity.
Chief executive Geoff Rollinson said the bridge let vehicles bypass residential and industrial areas in Cohuna to access the Murray Valley Hwy and McMillans Rd.
“Replacing the bridge with a concrete structure will provide current and future generations of motorists access to this road,” Mr Rollinson said.
A 30-tonne load limit has been in place for the original bridge, which spans Barr Creek, since March last year.
The bridge will be closed to all traffic until the new structure is complete.
Detours will be in place along Cohuna-McMillans Rd, Western Rd and Murray Valley Hwy, with construction expected to be complete by mid-February.
“Council thanks residents, visitors and motorists for their patience and looks forward to seeing this project completed as soon as possible,” Mr Rollinson said.
The project, along with the recently completed Apex Park Rd bridge, is part of the council’s $29 million capital works program.
The works have been supported by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.
