The Goulburn Valley Playing Area Allan Matheson Shield served up a pair of thrilling tussles on the resumption of play following a festive hiatus as well as the previous weekend’s Region Sides Championships in Ballarat.
One such ripping clash featured two of the bottom three sides as East Shepparton welcomed Euroa.
It was one of two games decided by three shots or less, with Shepparton Park and Kyabram renewing hostilities in a heart-stopping clash of their own.
However, where you found nothing of the sort was Shepparton Golf Bowling Club.
The Golfers welcomed Mooroopna to town, but gave their visitors anything but a comfortable go of it on the greens.
One of the more one-sided rink results you’ll see on the local bowls scene unfolded when the immensely star-studded quartet skipped by Brad Orr overpowered Paul Warren’s side to the tune of 35 shots, their massive 45-10 victory offering a potent taste of what was to come.
There were still contests to be found, with Col Power and coach Kris Ferguson undertaking rink wins by margins of one and three shots, respectively.
However, another blow away result was still there for the taking as Anthony Flapper spearheaded another huge haul for the Golfers, who swept the day and claimed an enormous 18-118 to 0-61 win.
The shellacking has Golf make up some ground on runaway leading outfit Tallygaroopna, which had more of a fight on its hands at home to Tatura-Hill Top.
The top side did not exclusively control matters, with the plucky visitor taking two rinks, but the squad of four led by David Daws pulled a commanding result to sway the tide as Tallygaroopna’s unbeaten run stayed alive, prevailing 14-87 to 4-71.
As mentioned earlier, East Shepparton and Euroa embarked on a tight tussle, but it was the south-eastern side that would savour the moment in registering a hard-fought second win of the season in a 16-73 to 2-71 result.
Finally, the finals make-up was set to be shaped by Park and Kyabram’s meeting — and didn’t the two hopefuls put on a show.
Youngster Charlie Boswood pulled through the decisive result in his rink after a back-and-forth day as the Bombers claimed a valuable set of points in their 14-82 to 4-79 home victory.
