A blast from the past in the form of two Careful Cobber cars will be on display, inviting both locals and tourists to unlock some treasured memories.
The miniature cars with big personalities, once a staple in children’s road safety education, will be displayed at the centre from Monday, December 23, until Friday, January 31, 2025.
The Careful Cobber program, initiated at the Driver Education Centre of Australia (DECA), engaged primary school children in hands-on road safety lessons using these distinctive motorised vehicles.
For many generations, the Careful Cobber cars have represented a time-honoured fixture of childhood, with a special day set aside for buckling down on road safety that all looked forward to.
Any local who has driven these cars has a story to share, even City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali.
“Many of us have fantastic memories of the Cobbers,” he said.
“We invite community members and visitors to take the family and enjoy this wonderful piece of local history on display.
“I look forward to bringing the kids and sharing some of these memories with them, while also enjoying some of the activities available.”
These activities include colouring pages, play cars, and a mock driving ground complete with road signs.
Information highlighting the history of the Careful Cobber program will also be featured, allowing parents to share the significance of these cars with their children.
Cr Sali wished to thank Shepparton’s Museum of Vehicle Evolution for loaning the emblematic little cars to the centre.
“The Careful Cobber cars are an iconic piece of Greater Shepparton’s history, and we are so lucky for the opportunity to have them on showcase at the visitor centre,” he said.
The Careful Cobber cars will be on display from Monday, December 23, until Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre, 530 Wyndham St, Shepparton.
