Over the next three months, daytime and night-time temperatures are predicted to be above average.
Coupled with recent months’ below-average rainfall, this has made the landscapes and forests dryer.
With the fire danger period having begun on November 11, Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding residents to prepare now for the hot season ahead.
Council had these suggestions:
- Clean your gutters
- Clear leaf litter and other fine fuels from around your home
- Remove flammable items such as paper, boxes and crates
- Store fuel supplies and chemicals away from your home
Preparing your property will help reduce your risk of property loss during a fire, even if you plan to leave early.
Farmers should also ensure their farming equipment is ready for summer and complies with any requirements, including water extinguishers and exhaust systems that are free from mechanical defects.
For burn-offs, people should first check council’s local law regarding when and where they can burn off.
Always pay attention to weather conditions, especially wind strength on the day of the burn but also several days afterwards.
Council municipal fire prevention officer Colin Kalmes said the recent warm weather and rainfall would see grass growth increase rapidly around Greater Shepparton.
“Everyone needs to be aware of their responsibilities to maintain their properties, particularly those in areas where grass fires can quickly take hold,” he said.
“Keeping vegetation at an acceptable level will assist in reducing the risk to other homeowners and residents.”
