The 271-game Demon — who is a life member at the club — will be back in red and blue for next season as part of the coaching panel, after almost a decade in the premier modern-day coaching factory that is the Hawthorn Football Club under Alistair Clarkson.
Yze has aspirations to one day join the large group of Clarkson assistants to successfully graduate to a head coaching role, but for now will help Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin steer the Demons ship as part of the coaching group.
“I’m really excited to be back at the club, but more importantly, I’m excited to be working alongside Goody (Simon Goodwin) and the coaching staff,” Yze said.
“Goody and I have got a strong connection and I see us as a really good fit together.
“I believe it’s an exciting list that can go places, and I’m looking forward to bringing what I’ve learnt along my coaching journey to the club.
“I’ve loved my time with the Hawks, but the opportunity to grow in a different role, with different coaches, was something that was really enticing to me.
“Being a past player back at my old club is great, but as a coach, what I’m really excited about is getting to work with the other coaches, and playing my part to get Melbourne back to a consistent finals outfit.”
Yze had been linked with a move to Essendon in recent weeks — and was also among the final candidates for the Adelaide head coach role which Matthew Nicks eventually secured — but brings his significant experience to Melbourne, which includes wearing the specialist goal-kicking, development, assistant coaching and match day strategy and opposition hats across his time at the Hawks.
“We are excited that Adem has chosen to join the club in a coaching role,” Melbourne's general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said.
“Adem is highly regarded within the industry and brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the club, having filled a number of senior coaching roles in his time at Hawthorn.
“Adem is passionate about Melbourne and we look forward to welcoming him back to the club where he played for over 14 seasons.”
Hawthorn thanked Yze for his positive impact at the club.
“Adem has been a fantastic contributor to our club for over nine years in a variety of coaching roles,” Hawthorn chief of football Graham Wright said.
“He has had a positive impact on our players, coaches and football program and we wish Adem, his wife Afijet and their children Jasmine and Noah all the best for the future.”
