Across the Goulburn Valley, 5000 primary school children have crafted imaginative storybooks as part of a unique competition.

To celebrate National Water Week, Goulburn Valley Water hosted ‘A Watery Adventure’ competition, featuring a week of tours, children’s activities and presentations by special guests for 40 schools from October 21 to 27.
Each student received a blank 12-page booklet to narrate the story of a water drop named Drippy, who journeys through the natural and urban water cycles.
Standout stories were recognised across various categories.
Hannah Potter, a Year 1 student at St Anne’s College, wrote a story titled The Thirsty Cat, which captured the judges’ hearts in the Prep to Year 2 category.
In the Years 3 to 4 section, Audrey Gacus from St Mel’s Primary School impressed with her illustrated tale, Rainy’s Show.
Indiana Brennan from Katunga Primary School won the Year 5 to 6 category for her imaginative work, Adventure of a Water Drop.
And in the inclusive section, Damian Peterson from Verney Rd School wowed with his story, The Sailor’s Treasure.
Goulburn Valley Water managing director Steve Capewell said the books’ subject matter highlighted the importance of GVW’s Education Program in schools.
“Some of the details in the books show that the educational activities our staff are doing in the schools are really working,” he said.
“The detail in the content and imagination of the illustrations is something that not only surprised me but indicated just how invested the next generation is in all things related to the climate, health and the environment.”
The winners’ stories will not only be published and showcased in regional libraries but will also serve as valuable educational resources in GVW Water Only kindergartens.
Each of the four overall winners will receive gift vouchers and the opportunity to read their creations at local kindergartens during Water Week celebrations.
