An unexpected customer made its way into an Allan St store this week.

A snake was seen sliding its way down the east end of the CBD on Monday afternoon, winding around the chairs outside Healthy Tummies Pantry.

Owner of the gluten-free store Deb Kitt said the intruder slithered its way into the store at one point before make its own way out.

She said maybe the snake was looking for a gluten-free treat.

As temperatures rise, snakes are expected to emerge from their hibernation period to look for food and mates.

Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action senior wildlife projects officer Abby Smith said snakes would only try to defend themselves if they felt threatened, and it was best to leave the creatures alone and educate children on safe spaces to walk.

“Talk to kids about snake safety; what to wear, staying on the path and not putting your hands in long grass, under rocks or tin,” Ms Smith said.
