And while finishing treatment is music to a survivor’s ears, unforeseen challenges in recovery still lie ahead.
That’s why Cancer Council Victoria is launching its Cancer Wellness and Exercise Program in Greater Shepparton, a free eight-week education, exercise and wellness plan to support the wellbeing of cancer survivors.
Hosted at GV Health in Shepparton, the program starts on Wednesday, October 30, and enrolment is open.
It offers one-hour group fitness sessions led by experienced exercise specialists and short weekly education sessions for individuals who have completed their cancer treatment.
“(After treatment ends), finding a ‘new normal’ is physically and emotionally complex,” program co-ordinator Tracie Julian said.
“We often speak with people affected by cancer who share how challenging it is to return to their lives.”
Ms Julian said research had shown that exercise rehabilitation programs helped cancer survivors manage pain, reduce fatigue and improve their quality of life.
“This program provides people affected by cancer with the tools to deal with the changes in their lives at home and work, as well as the confidence to exercise and increase their strength and fitness,” she said.
A previous participant said the program gave them the energy to carry out daily tasks and demonstrated “concrete things” they could do to help themselves.
While improving physical strength and fitness is crucial, the bonds formed between participants are significant.
“It was a great benefit to both my physical and mental wellbeing — it increased my fitness and positive outlook,” another previous participant said.
With about 432 residents receiving a cancer diagnosis each year, this program offers hope, guiding survivors towards a brighter and more fulfilling life post-treatment.
