On Friday, August 30, GOTAFE swapped rainbows for purple to mark Wear it Purple Day, an annual event where purple is worn to show support for young members of the LGBTIQA+ community.
Hosted at GOTAFE’s Fryers St campus, the event drew crowds and brought together 15 local organisations, including GV Pride Shepparton.
Laura Baker, executive director of student experience at GOTAFE, said the diversity of attendees directly reflected the organisation’s values.
“GOTAFE is committed to providing staff and students with a safe and inclusive environment, free from discrimination,” she said.
“Everybody has the right to be proud of who they are.”
Nicky Tsekouras, winner of the Wear It Purple Youth Action Council (YAC) Design Competition, created this year’s theme: Your Passion, Your Pride.
The competition invited entrants to design a campaign showcasing LGBTQIA+ individuals openly pursuing and achieving their dreams.
In the wake of Wear it Purple Day, GOTAFE invites students to join its Student Pride Network, a platform connecting LGBTQIA+ students and allies.
“GOTAFE is all about creating equal opportunities, addressing systemic barriers and actively celebrating diversity,” Ms Baker said.
“Our Student Pride Network fosters inclusion and provides a space for students to be themselves.”
