Moira's citizens recognised at Australia Day Awards

On January 14, Moira Shire Council Deputy Mayor Julie Brooks announced the 2021 winners, including Cobram's Isabella Boys who was the joint Young Citizen of the Year.

“I was feeling really nervous and I was shaking so much,” Miss Boys said.

Miss Boys uses local ingredients to bake treats for Lions Need for Feed hay run volunteers and police officers on the NSW-Victoria border.

She is an active member of the Parks Victoria Junior Ranger Program and has collected rubbish left behind by campers along the Murray River.

She also holds fundraising activities to support local causes, including the Cobram Community Cinema Project.

“I'm not going to stop, I've got a lot more plans,” she said.

Miss Boys has now attended three Moira Council Australia Day awards events and has been recognised as the youngest person to have ever been nominated.

Her mother Jane Bowman was extremely proud.

“I might have guided her in the beginning but it's all her, I'm just the support crew,” she said.

“She's (Isabella) had lots of people that have guided her and she still has lots of people that support her, and some of them are in this room tonight.”Cobram local Mary Kennedy was runner-up Citizen of the Year for her work volunteering for Foodbank and Meals on Wheels, as well as her fundraising efforts for the Katamatite Football Club.

The awards night was held at the Cobram Civic Centre where formalities were followed by drinks and canapés.

The 2021 Moira Shire Council Australia Day Awards winners:

● Arts/Culture and/or Environment Project of the Year Award — Thank you Nathalia Fireys.

● Community Organisation of the Year Award — Nathalia Women's Health and Support Group and Tungamah Lions Club.

● Community Event of the Year Award — St Mary of the Angels VCAL program.

● Young Citizen of the Year Award — Isabella Boys of Cobram and Justin Watson of Nathalia.

● Citizen of the Year Award — Bernadette Steward of Numurkah and David McKenzie of Nathalia.
