In race one, the Sunset Statues 1 event, 182 birds, representing 11 trainers, were released alongside the Cobb highway between Deniliquin and Hay.
The birds made the journey back to their respective trainers’ lofts, and the competition was judged based on the birds’ average speed on the flight. This velocity is measured in metres per minute and calculated using the distance from the starting location and the time of arrival.
Lancaster’s Jim Arthur won the opening round with a velocity of 867.776, his birds completing the 140km flight in 2:42:05.
Three Kyabram trainers, Phillip King (838.396), Gary Rayner (817.067) and John Carroll (788.067) took places two to four.
Rochester’s Musgrove Lofts, a first-time competitor, earned fifth place with a velocity of 736.314, while Echuca’s Andrew Williamson (674.33) took sixth place.
The club’s Sunset Statues 2 event will see birds put in a repeat performance, from the same liberation location, next Saturday, July 20.
