Don’t let her petite size or young age fool you, Skylar Schmidt has got everything it takes to be a world champion dancer.
Learning from the best since she was a tiny tot at age two, Skylar grew up in a dance family.
“My nan is Tanya Rixon who owns the Body Basics Dance Academy here in Corowa,” Miss Schmidt said.
“She was a dancer, my mum was a dancer and my cousin, Patience Joss is a dancer too.”
In June this year, both Skylar and patience will represent Australia in Prague for the six days of the annual Dance World Cup.
“I’ll be doing three routines,” Skylar said.
“Musical theatre, lyrical and hip hop.
“I’m not really nervous about it, it’s not the first time I will be competing overseas.”
Though she works hard at it, dance is not Skylar’s only passion as she also regularly competes in pageants.
“I participated in an International pageant in Ireland two years ago, and I hope to do more pageants as I get older,” she said.
But for now, her dance card is full with classes every day and at least an hour every morning of practice, Skylar has proven that dedication and commitment to a dream do pay off.
“This is the first time that Skylar has auditioned for a position on the Australian Dance team,” mum, Danielle said.
“She wasn’t actually able to participate in the live audition so I had to send in videos of her dances.
“The panel score all of the dances to meet certain criteria for the World Cup and Skylar scored for all three of the ones we sent in.”
Understandably proud of Skylar’s achievements, her success is made all the more evident with her being selected as one of only fifteen representatives from a total of 152 contestants for the positions.
Perhaps the icing on the cake, though, is the fact that Skylar has been chosen to be the Australian team’s mascot for the event.
“I’ll be dressed as Bindi Irwin to represent the Australian team,” Skylar said.
“It will be a lot of fun, and I have a great costume.”
