About 200 children attended, and their parents ensured the three-hour program ran smoothly.
Events included high jump, long jump, discus, sprints and javelin (vortex for children between five and 12). The young athletes rotated through the various activities every 30 minutes.
Rochester Little Athletics president Gary Milligan has been overseeing the program for the past seven years and was thrilled with the turnout of youngsters and family members.
“It’s a privilege to see young and older children be part of Little Athletics in Rochester,” Mr Milligan said.
“All of my children are still associated with sports, and Little Athletics is crucial in developing confidence.”
While the weather was hot, the children didn’t seem to mind while they tried their hand at familiar and new pastimes.
“They learn all the fundamental skills of running, throwing, catching and teamwork, which then sets them up for the other sports such as cricket, football, tennis and basketball,” Mr Milligan said.
“While they learn new skills, they also gain confidence in their ability to do things as part of a team situation; while there is also a competitive element, the children also get to have fun and have fun with other children their age.”
One of the older competitors is Ziah Haines, a Year 9 student at Rochester Secondary College.
“I’ve been taking part since I was five,” Ziah said.
“While I continue to enjoy my time in this program, I also play netball and tennis.”
