In a letter delivered to more than 70 residents in the area, Department of Education and Training area executive director Cord Sadler said asbestos removal had begun last week, and advised people stay away from the Hawdon St site.
“I kindly ask that the community not enter the school grounds and areas that have been secured,” he said.
“Air monitoring will be in place throughout the asbestos removal as an additional safety measure.
“I would like to assure you that community safety is our top priority.”
Mr Sadler said workers would be wearing protective gear, which was “standard practice” when removing asbestos.
He also said construction company Hansen Yuncken would begin works this week.
The department did not specify when the asbestos removal would be complete, but assured the removal process was standard for a building with asbestos.
The department recommended anyone with further questions to contact the Victorian School Building Authority on 1800 896 950.
The new Greater Shepparton Secondary College is expected to open in 2022.
