Mrs Brearley moved to Echuca six months ago, and after settling in, she found an organisation that benefits the community.
“As I’m fairly new to Echuca, I wanted to join a community organisation that aligns with my ethics,” Mrs Brearley said.
“I always knew about the Lions and thought it would be an excellent opportunity for myself. And I was impressed with what they do.”
While the Lions is a community-based group that works to serve the community, Mrs Brearley would like to see many more people join what is a socially minded organisation that supports worthy causes.
“I would like to see the membership increase with many younger people. Ideally, people in their early to mid-40s,” Mrs Brearley said.
“As a woman, I can bring a few fresh ideas to the group and hopefully attract more women who could volunteer their time to an incredible organisation.”
Long-serving member John Simson has been with the group since 1981 and understands the challenges facing similar organisations in attracting and retaining volunteers.
“We are hoping that with the addition of Jenny, we can inspire newer members to join our cause and ensure the long-term survival of the Lions,” Mr Simson said.
While Mr Simson remembers a better time decades ago, he is concerned that such organisations may not be around for ever.
“Back in the 1960s and ’70s, many members would join who were in their early to mid-30s or 40s,” Mr Simson said.
“In the last 12 months, we have had new members who are much older, aged 55 to 60. The Lions would love to see newer, younger members join.
“The challenge is attracting younger members who could provide a critical service to the community for the next 40 to 50 years instead of just 20 years.”
While the organisation was founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones, the Australian branch celebrated 75 years in Australia in 2022.
One of the club’s projects is the annual Christmas raffle, which financially supports local charities.
The club also runs a junior public speaking program, which gives students from Years 3 to 6 the opportunity to develop confidence.
Members also sell sausages at Bunnings stores.
