Benalla Football Club’s new recruiting committee could have done well to have paid special attention to a game of Aussie Rules at the Benalla College Faithful St Campus on Friday.
The match, between arch-rivals, Benalla College and Wangaratta High School, attracted a lot of interest and was played at a tough, hectic pace.
Although goals were hard to come by, the tackling and long kicking was a feature, Wangaratta having the edge for the majority of the game.
But Benalla didn’t give up and continued to thrust the ball forward in a bid to even the scores.
A couple of late goals in the last quarter gave the home side a chance of victory.
But Wangaratta consolidated and stretched the margin to 24 points at the final siren.
A source at Demon land told The Ensign that recruiting officers talked to a few prospective players after the game. Best players for Benalla, who we could see in a Demons jumper next season were Anna Reid, Jaclyn Symes, Stacey Emms and Katie Heywood.

2010
FCJ College student Maddie Bakkar and Shepparton-based dance partner Rodney Brown competed the National Dancesport Championships in Canberra recently, coming away with four national titles in the junior age group.
Getting to the championships – let alone winning four of six entries – was almost a miracle for Maddie as she dislocated her kneecap only 10 days before the event.
Any remaining practice time was managed while on crutches and taken up with intensive physiotherapy.
Maddie competed in the dance championship with her knee strapped and wore a knee brace for extra support.
A total of 460 couples from all states and territories of Australia competed in the event.
As well as winning four titles in waltz, quickstep, jive and merrilyn, the pair placed second in the cha cha and tangoette.
