“The SES Rutherglen Unit responded to at least 36 requests for assistance last Friday, mostly due to fallen trees obstructing roads,” SES Controller Darren Trevaskis told The Free Press.
“Five buildings were damaged, power lines came down, clotheslines and fences were smashed and tree limbs were hanging dangerously from trees, poised to fall.”
Mr Trevaskis expressed his unit’s appreciation of the work undertaken by SES Chiltern Unit, Rutherglen Fire Brigade, SES Wangaratta Unit, SES Yarrawonga Unit, Indigo Shire Council and Ausnet for their help.
On Saturday, Rutherglen SES responded to five call outs in the morning. Two buildings were damaged and three trees were down.
“There are still a lot of limbs hanging, so please be careful and call the arborist if required. Special thanks to Indigo Shire Council for their countless work cleaning up and assisting,” Mr Trevaskis said.
Further damage occurred last Sunday for more thunderstorms. The SES responded to multiple tree downs and roof damage.
“Friday’s storm showed some areas are more impacted with winds powerful enough to rip off roofs and multiple trees,” the SES Controller said.
“Thirty millimetres of rain and hail covered the ground; while others reported five drops and a light breeze.”
Local SES responds via calls for assistance via 132 500. The message from the SES is clear:
“Take care when travelling as trees, limbs and flash flooding could impact roads. Secure loose furniture and clear gutters. Never park or shelter under trees.”
“It was great support from local crews – both on the ground and with administration, an area that many forget about, which can take up hours of volunteer time and patience,” Mr Trevaskis said.
