The Goulburn Valley Boxing Club product got a stern test from Melissa Bartlett at the Whitehorse Function Centre in West Burwood, but used her boxing IQ to score a unanimous decision win.
Fry, who is set to represent Victoria in the 60kg division, stepped up to face light welterweight (64kg) Bartlett, and coach Zedda Harrington said it had been one of the prodigy's best performances to date.
“(Bartlett) pushed Ellie, (she is a) strong woman, a very fit come-forward fighter, just what the doctor ordered leading into the Olympic tryouts,” he said.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better lead up fight.”
While the bout revealed plenty, Harrington said Fry's ability to fight through fatigue had stood out.
“It was great to see Ellie be controlled while fatigued, especially in the last round,” he said.
“I saw plenty of growth, she was just that little bit quicker off the mark and landed the better placed combinations. Now we just have to move forward and build on this.
“I don’t sit on results too long, always remaining level-headed, development in this game is the major focus and all my guys know this.
“Ellie is a gem, she knows our system - amazing student to work with.”
Fry moves forward to Olympic trials, which start on December 3.
She will face Ella Boot, Angel Rushton and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, all tough opponents.
The GV Boxing Club dedicated the fight to Shepparton boxer Dwight Ritchie, who tragically died the weekend prior.
