Around 350 metres of the levee, which is north of Shepparton, were damaged in the October 2022 floods.
G-MW said repair works would include:
- access track construction to allow the works crew to gain access to the site;
- stripping of topsoil and loose material and stockpiling within the construction footprint;
- excavating the levee breach areas to solid foundation; and
- importing about 17,000 cubic metres of clay material via trucks and trailers.
Northern Construction Group has been awarded the contract.
“People will see the site being set up in the coming days as well as heavy machinery and equipment operating across the area and on site for the duration of the works,” G-MW infrastructure delivery services general manager Warren Jose said.
The end of Loch Garry Rd leading into the loch was closed to the public from Monday, May 22, with traffic management signs indicating changed traffic conditions for the duration of the works.
“The safety of landowners, locals and our staff and contractors during this time is our priority,” Mr Jose said.
Repair works are expected to be completed by late June or early July, depending on weather conditions.
Loch Garry protects 116 landholders from minor and moderate floods.
In the wake of the floods, a Loch Garry Reference Committee was formed to review the service requirements of the Loch Garry Flood Protection District infrastructure and its operating rules.
The cost of repairing the levees and developing a future service strategy is expected to be $1.25 million.
