May 13-14
Twenty teams entered the first of our winter tournaments, many old friends and some attending for the first time.
We played three games of 16 ends on the Saturday and two games of 16 ends on the Sunday, and after two days of play we had three five-game winners, so a play-off was necessary to get a winner and runner-up.
The Learmonth team got the bye and went into the final, while John McGowan’s team had to play the Bendigo team skipped by Jason McGowan. Bendigo won its way to the final.
The winner of the tournament was first-time visitor Learmonth. Runner-up were Bendigo, while third was Jason McGowan's team.
The next tournament is Gulpa Creek fours, which will be held on Saturday, June 17, (10am start) and Sunday, June 18 (9.30am start). Entries to the club or Paul Clear.

The game of scrounge last Wednesday attracted a good roll-up with four rinks in play.
Dave Thomas dominated on rink one with a fine tally of 60 points and daylight second.
John Fisher had the wand working well to amass 56 points to take out rink two, while club champion Graham Turner had an identical score of 56 points to annex rink three.
Rink four provided some highlights with Sue Harris and Denise Gilmore finishing level on 49 points apiece and sharing the prizes.
Scrounge will continue on Wednesdays starting at 1pm. Names to be listed by 12.45pm.
The women held their annual general meeting last Tuesday. Lady president Denise Gilmore was returned as president for another 12 months. Secretary is Bev Brereton and Pauline Humbert retains the role of treasurer. Katthi Maddison takes on the position of tournament secretary from Lorraine Appleby. The club acknowledges the work ethic provided by Appleby over the past seasons.
At the weekend, a local rink played the two-day mixed fours at Moama Bowling Club.
Jenny Fisher, John Whiteside/John Fisher, Kim Ray and Ken Main (s) displayed some real talent to win three out of the scheduled five games. The Stan Limbrick team from Mathoura was the overall winner.
The Moama Carnival continues during the week and finishes with the prestigious George Lynch fours this weekend.
The 20 local members who journeyed to the Pyramid Hill open fours recently returned home empty-handed, with one rink winning two out of three games, but no prizes.
The club will be holding a variety day of bowls on Monday, June 12, beginning at noon with a game of bowls over 10 ends, followed by the pig on the spit sliders from 2pm to 3pm. The bar will be open and the cost will be $10 per person.
Join in with royalty and celebrate a birthday atmosphere. Contact Ian Johnson on 0475 230 109 or Lloyd Buchanan on 0427 542 311 for details and entries. Numbers are limited, so book now.
A correction to the previous notes last week regarding Norm and Margaret Bacon and family. The notes stated the incorrect names. It should have read “the club extends sincere condolences on the sad passing of daughter Judi (Payne) and son Robert Bacon”. This scribe offers sincere, heartfelt apologies to the Bacon families on this unfortunate error in print.
The club will hold its annual general meeting on Monday, June 5, starting at 7.30pm. Nomination forms are available at the club.

It is National Volunteers Week and the theme is ‘the change makers'. Echuca Bowls Club members certainly contribute to the community to make a change.
During the May Carnival, the volunteering effort was exceptional. With about 100 bowlers each day for nine consecutive days, the greens were prepared, the event draw was organised, office staffed, afternoon tea provided, raffle tickets sold, bar staff supplied drinks, countless behind-the-scenes jobs were completed and then the club readied for the next day.
What an effort by our amazing volunteers.
Biggest congratulations to Ronnie Gallagher for bringing it all together, Jade Bennett and Max Clifford for preparing the greens, Anna Meyer for rostering kitchen helpers and Jill Young for the bar rostering. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way. You are all stars.

The carnival dinner was a highlight with our budding actors providing a hilarious skit and the drawing of the raffle to support our ‘Knockers’ (Steve Nolan) for his trip to Scotland.
Our volunteers rested for three days and then started helping out our mates from Moama with the overflow of their carnival. All will be ready to host the State Region Sides competition in 10 days.
The Echuca Bowls Club annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 17, at 7pm.
