But these local footy stars did just that, donning the “Violet Crumble” on Saturday as the GVL tackled Ovens & Murray at Albury.
O&M was a seven-point victor, but several players stamped their authority on the representative stage.
In defence, Aiden Mills was a standout in his tussle with O&M skipper Leigh Williams.
Mills kept the highly vaunted Yarrawonga forward goalless while also getting a fair slice of the football himself, collecting 19 disposals, seven contested.
But it was his intercept game where the Echuca defender excelled, gathering 10 intercept possessions and three intercept marks.
While Mills carved out a tag as one of the GVL’s most reliable down back, his Murray Bombers teammate Jack Evans threatened to be the game-breaker.
Evans starred with four goals and was instrumental in the GV’s fightback.
But the stats say his influence was felt across the ground in an industrious display, gathering 19 disposals, six contested possessions and seven inside-50s.
Will Monahan’s reputation as a consistent goal-scorer continued on the interleague stage, converting a single major.
But the Echuca co-captain was equally as dangerous when swung into the middle of the ground, gathering 18 disposals and nine contested disposals in a crucial performance.
Kyabram’s Kaine Herbert was listed in the GVL’s best players, and a quick look at the data backs up what was a key showing from the Bombers star.
Herbert tallied 23 touches in a trademark outing, imposing himself around the contest with nine contested possessions.
Herbert’s performance in the middle was outshadowed only by Mansfield’s Frazer Dale, who collected 31 disposals and 11 marks in a near best-on-ground display.
