The Link-age Group will be facilitated by Deniliquin Salvation Army community engagement officer Sandra Whyborn and June Mahoney.
“Our purpose is to provide friendship opportunities for anyone who is feeling lonely, isolated or would just like to catch up with people and develop friendships,” Ms Whyborn said.
As the program evolves, the group looks forward to input from those attending.
Organisers are open to all ideas that encourage having fun and linking the community.
Ms Mahoney arrived in Deniliquin in March last year and has worked in the community with several groups.
But she said she still found it difficult to get a good grounding of what it happening in the community.
She said this group would go make it easier for people in the same situation.
“When I was new to town it was hard to find what was happening, so this group will be a great way to do that,” she said.
“Since then I have found similar sentiments in talking to others.”
The first meeting will be held at the Salvation Army Hall, at 60 Edwardes Street Deniliquin, on March 24. The morning tea will start at 10.30am.
The group will then get together on a fortnightly basis after that.
The groups main aim is to link the community and build confidence within those who attend.
If you would like to learn more about the initiative, group members will be in the Deniliquin CBD today between 1pm and 3pm handing out flyers and speaking with interested people.
They will be located near the Cressy St Kiosk, and invite people to “stop and say hello”.
