Australia has slapped financial sanctions and travel bans against members of Myanmar's ruling junta two years after the group seized power.
Sixteen members of the military regime's governing State Administration Council have been targeted as key individuals responsible for the coup.
They include junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and his deputy, Soe Win.
The military-controlled organisations Myanmar Economic Public Holdings and Myanmar Economic Corporation have also been sanctioned.
Myanmar Campaign Network manager Tasneem Roc said the sanctions were a good first step but swift action needed to be taken to cut off the junta's revenue.
"We need to see sanctions on the extractive industry, including on Myanmar Mining Enterprise and Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise," she told AAP in a statement.
"The junta will attempt to further repress the will of the people with illegitimate elections this year.
"We must show our rejection of this hijacking of democracy by sanctioning the Union Electoral Commission and its military-appointed members."
Tun-Aung Shwe, a Canberra-based representative of Myanmar government-in-exile the National Unity Government, also said sanctions against gas revenues should be the next step.
"We need to cut off the main source of revenue flowing to the military junta," he told the ABC.
But Dr Shwe thanked the government for "showing that the international community is fighting against the dictatorship in Myanmar and the brutality of the military regime".
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said sanctions were rarely the first choice in Australia's diplomatic arsenal.
"The military regime has responded violently to any form of political expression, including peaceful protests. There is evidence thousands of civilians, including children, have been jailed, tortured, or killed," she said.
"The government will bring all aspects of Australian power to our foreign policy, employ every strategy at our disposal towards upholding rights consistent with our values and our interests."
Sixteen senior Iranian law enforcement and military officials, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, and one entity have also been slapped with targeted Magnitsky-style sanctions and travel bans.
They include the head of the army, Sayyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, the warden of the Rejaee Shahr prison and various divisional heads of law enforcement.
They also include others involved in the violent crackdown on protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.
Four Iranians and four entities have also been targeted for their production and supply of drones to Russia to be used to target Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
"Australia stands with the people of Myanmar, the people of Iran and with the people of Ukraine," Senator Wong said.
Opposition foreign affairs spokesman Simon Birmingham welcomed the sanctions.
"The coalition has consistently called for more action to hold Iran to account, while offering strong bipartisan support for action in relation to both Iran and Myanmar," he wrote on Twitter.
