The Futurity Investment Group Cost of Education Index estimates the total cost of a government education in country Victoria will be $75,217 over 13 years for a child starting school in 2023.
This figure falls just below the national average ($75,795) and is considerably cheaper than country NSW ($82,823) and country South Australia ($81,824).
Regional and remote Victorian parents are forecast to spend four times more on outside tuition ($1017) than school fees ($249) this year, with musical instruments ($681), electronic devices ($529), school camps ($438) and transport ($384) also adding to the total cost of a government education.
The total cost of a Catholic education in regional and remote Victoria is forecast to be $165,262 over 13 years for a child starting school in 2023, $1684 above the national average ($163,578).
Outside tuition ($2475) will be the most expensive component of a Catholic education for a child starting school in regional Victoria this year, ahead of school fees ($1288), electronic devices ($1060), musical instruments ($663) and school camps ($585).
The total cost of an independent education in non-metro Victoria is forecast to be $208,057 over 13-years for a child starting school in 2023 and considerably cheaper than regional and remote South Australia ($238,625).
Meanwhile, the study also found Melbourne to be Australia’s most expensive city for a government education, 17 per cent above the national average.
